Downton Abbey. We’re into the second season on PBS’s Masterpiece series, which aired in the UK last fall. It’s a must see. The characters are wonderful. The acting is outstanding! Hugh Bonneville is very Colin Firthish to me. Their voices are so similar. Elizabeth McGovern makes a perfect Lady Cora and comes across sometimes as slighty snooty and a bit air-headed. Other times, she’s a voice of reason. Brendan Coyle is the REAL reason I started watching this tho. I got hooked on him in North and South…no, not that Civil War fiasco. The one BBC made in 2005 featuring Richard Armitage as Thornton and Coyle as Timmons. All in one movie. *sigh*
But the REAL STAR of Downton Abbey is Maggie Smith. I swear that woman is the funniest and best actress ever and she makes her comedic character look completely real! Do not miss this series if for no other reason than to NOT miss Maggie!!
Can you tell I love period drama?! However…BB hates it. As soon as he hears the music, he sticks his head in a book and doesn’t come up for air until the credits roll. For the life of him, he can’t figure out why anyone watches this stuff. Especially the British productions. And they’re the ones I wait for with Great Anticipation!!! Go figure.
PS If you’re new to this, the first season is available on DVD everywhere…Wally World, Sam’s, Amazon. OR you can watch it here! PBS has an excellent site and the Downton Abbey section is outstanding!
