The smell of the falling leaves. The crispy crackley cold air. The band. Tailgating, albeit very limited as the whole “cook in the parking lot” thing just doesn’t make sense to me. So tailgating a la The Queen=sandwiches made earlier in the day, chips, a thermos of coffee, iced down pop and….drumroll, please…a tailgate!!! Actually we served off the tailgate and sat on an old quilt in the grass. Best sandwich I’ve had in ages!! Kids scarfed their’s down at lightening speed and then were OFF to chase each other, bugs and stray footballs thrown into our Territory.
I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!! For all the reasons above but also the sounds…the announcer, the cheerleaders, the chants, the music, the crowd roar. Oh and funnel cakes reside at games also. The aroma of a funnel cake can hunt me down and slap me in the face from a mile away. And there are the hugs when the home team scores, the high fives, the dancing, the jumping up and down. I tell the grands, “Now watch Willie. He’s going to do push ups every time we score.” It is just SOOOO much fun. Then the team runs onto the field and things just go crazy!! And as the band takes the field at half time, I tell the grands, “now when I was in high school, the drill team marched WITH the band in real clothes (like, we had NOTHING hanging out anywhere for the world to see!) and then I tell them how hard we practiced all summer and how our skirts had to be just so so in length. Yeah, I got glazed looks. Whatever.
Fall is absolutely my favorite season. Football is a big part of that. And taking grandsons to their first college game. BTW, the game went into 4 overtimes. WHAT A GAME!!
