OK. I cave. The world of The Hobbit just got its first taste of the upcoming movie due out in December of 2012 with the trailer that hit the net tonight. Just thought I’d share a link to this very promising movie. It looks wonderful. And sounds wonderful! Thanks to bccmee for the link:

Yeah! I’m a gonner too, TQ!! The trailer is even more wonderful than I could even have hoped for! And the singing!! It’s going to be hard to wait until next December, but we now have this little taste we can go back to for an Thorin “injection” now and then!! I’ll have to see which of my grandchildren are keen to see Tintin so I can see the trailer on the BIG SCREEN and hear Thorin in BIG surround sound. Hope I can refrain from swooning!!!!

PS Amazing that you have so much snow and we have none! We will likely have a “green” Christmas too which is pretty common here on the West Coast. At least if we get rain we don’t need to shovel it!! 🙂

and…I get to go out in the white stuff today. Need groceries and finish shopping for one of the grands. Not looking forward to it but getting my boots out for extra grip action on slick spots. But there is a plus…SLEDDING!!! This Texas gal discovered sledding my first winter here and it so much fun!

I was fortunate enough to see The War Horse onstage in London last year. Spectacular show! I will probably treat myself to seeing Tintin just for the pleasure of watching Thorin on his horse on the big screen and hearing him sing in Surround Sound.

I knew it!!! About the Surround Sound. About the song…the pitch is so low, it almost rumbles. Add Surround and it HAS to be amazing. I don’t think I’ve anticipated a movie so since maybe “Dances With Wolves”.
Your comment, “I shivered to hear that song enfold itself around me in cool, near silent darkness.” in your blog today was exactly what I anticipate when I hear and see the trailer at the theater. One of your blog references, The Guardian , had an interesting take on the song in the trailer but a commenter vocalized a train of thought that I’ve been observing for a while in the World of Tolkien:
“o.k. There’s just one major problem here – it’s the wrong tune! This is definitely not the tune that my Father sang when I was eight years old and he was reading ‘The Hobbit’ to me, one chapter at a time…very shoddy research *g*.
he said, with tongue firmly planted in cheeck!! Made me laugh as was the commenter’s intention. He knows Tolkienites DO take themselves..and Tolkein…seriously. VERY seriously! Just had to tweak them a bit!! LOL!

It was an astounding experience. That trailer is really well constructed. The Empire magazine summary does a decent job of showing how it creates tension organized around that song. It’s no wonder people are raving about it.
The other thing I loved about the Guardian review was a comment: “Richard Armitage sits down and sings about gold.” Hope Armitage, should he see that, take it as humorous joshing, which I also think it was.

That’s how I took his Armitage/gold remark too. Perhaps gold=ticket sales?!!
Interesting contrasts between the 1st half of the trailer and the second half. The first half was so sunny, light-hearted, humorous. And then the intro to The Song began and very quickly the mood changed to serious, shadowy lighting, ominous. Actually, you could divide it into 3 parts with the last part beginning as The Song ends, the orchestra explodes and the panoramic views and action shots burst onto the screen. Chill worthy!!! Argueable points to be sure but just an opinion. 😉

No, I think that’s right. This is the challenge of filming that book — essentially a light hearted children’s adventure story (Tolkien is supposed to have told it to his kids as a bedtime story) with dramatic conflict present but minimized. The film has to have something for adults and make the connections to the high moral drama of LOTR clearer than the book did. Trailer really hits that balance exceptionally well.
