Do NOT miss “The Dust Bowl” tonight!!

Big Boss and I watched the first part of “The Dust Bowl” on PBS last night and it was outstanding.  We’ve both heard our parents and grandparents talk about those awful days when the entire country was not only mired in an economic depression but an ongoing drought.   I could tell the stories I’ve heard, but Ken Burns does a much better job of telling the story.  Seriously…try to watch this…with your kids.  God help us if this happens again.

I remember Grandma Lupfer telling out the wet sheets on the windows and over Dad’s crib. And also when the folks remodeled at some point, they still found all sorts of Dirty Thirty Dust. I don’t know how they stood it…strength of character and perseverance and just sheer Kansas stubbornness.

Isn’t that the truth!? They were tougher than me for sure. As we watched last night, they got to the part about where they were trying to get farmers to terrace their ground and I looked at BB and said, “I know where this is leading.” Sure enough. I was right, sad to say.
