Back to Blue

A friend gave me this cross and an old classmate gave me the brick from our old high school, which sits on top of my grandad's tobacco stand, with pale aqua stencilled walls in the background. :)

I’m really not particular about my blues as I love them all: aqua, turquoise, teal, powder blue, Tiffany blue, royal, navy….I am a non-discriminating lover of blue! 🙂  But because blue does it for me does not mean I hate non-blue.  Nope, certain shades of rose set my heart a soarin’ and magentas throw me into a tizzy of sorts.  Then there’s the purples. Which I adore.  But purple is either the favorite of K State Wildcats who bleed purple or little old ladies who wear red hats. I definitely do NOT wear red hats.

Red is not my friend.  Put red on me and my face takes an”on fire” hue.  It pulls the red right out of my skin with me biting and fighting the whole time.  You see, I blush easily.  Doesn’t matter the situation. I can blush at the drop of a Granny Murphey’s bonnet. There’s never any question as to whether I’m mad, upset, embarrassed, befuddled, having a hot flash…whatever.  My face will turn bright red no matter how hard I try to control it.

I also cry red.  And puffy.  You know those beautiful crying scenes where the actress is distraught, tearfully pleading for her life, her love, her chocolates and stays perfectly gorgeous in the process?  That would not be me. One tear and the face is fire engine red, the eyes puffy and red, the schnoze drippy.  Not one bit pretty. My mother always told me to go wash my face.  I didn’t get it until I grew up.  Not only did the face NEED washing but the cold water helped reduce the redness, puffiness and drippiness.  Wow.

But back to blue.  Which is what I always do.  I’ve tried the above-mentioned colors to no avail.  I always come back to blue.  Always.  Just like I gravitate to blue, some folks gravitate to red. Or brown. Or black. Those around me are now shocked if I appear in public in anything besides blue.  They wonder if something horrible has happened.  Like Coldwater Creek finally ran out of blue clothing?  Or Big Boss said “NO more blue!”  Not happening folks.

So blue dishes and I are connected.  We understand each other.  I can get lost in all that blueness and forget the troubles of the world.  I think it has something to with the sky in my particular case.  When I was a kid, I used to stretch out on the carpet grass with all those chiggers and watch the sky forever. Oh sure I paid a big price the next day when all those little red bugs would make themselves at home on my tummy, legs, arms, neck, toes.  But all that blue love was worth it.

Why am I itching now?

And for the record, I have it of the best authority that Coach Snyder really wanted blue instead of purple.  Blue was already taken however. 😉

And for the second record…bluebonnet season is approaching!!!!  JOY OH JOY!

I also go red when I cry, when I’m nervous, when I’m hot (imagine what i’ve been like this summer!). So blue is automatic cooler for me. But I worked with cancer patients for almost 10 years as the volunteer coordinator of our local Look Good Feel Better programme (http://lookgoodfeelbetter.org/about-lgfb/history) and one of the things we always suggested for the ‘red’ face was the use of a green tint (try Maybelline) beneath foundation. After years of the ‘red’ face myself, I finally gave it a go and it does work!
