IF…you enjoy Period Dramas, watch North and South tonight!
(for an audio teaser, click this link for a reading of a short excerpt from the novel, North and South.)http://www.richardarmitagenet.com/files/sounds/north-and-south-extract.mp3
(Hooked yet?!!) 😀
IF…you adore old-fashioned love stories, try watching Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe bring John Thornton and Margaret Hale to life!
IF…you’re bored with the offerings of summer television programming, turn the dial to the adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel, North and South, never seen on US television before…well, we don’t think it’s been broadcast here.
IF…you’re partial to the excellence of BBC productions such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and perhaps Persuasion…or maybe Sense and Sensibility, think about viewing another wonderful BBC mini-series!
IF….18 years ago you fell in love with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie, you “may” 😉 be equally enthralled with Thornton and Hale?!
IF…you know little about 19th century Northern England politics, social problems and/or culture, by all means join the crowd tonight on channel 259!
IF…you fear getting caught up in a wonderful tale of romance, cultural upheaval and Victorian society…stay away from the TV, for I promise, you’ll love this mini-series.
And…finally, IF you crave beautiful soundtracks, perfect costuming, outstanding acting, perfect visuals and exquisite writing…come on…pop some popcorn, make some tea, get comfy and see just exactly why this mini-series crashed the internet BBC boards in 2004 throughout England!!
7:00-11:00 TONIGHT on the Inspiration channel 259!! Finally, the USA gets to see this delightful, inspiring, magnificent movie! And yes, I’m running out of adjectives…
PS If you loved Brendan Coyle as Bates in Downton Abbey, you’ll be happy to know that he plays a main character in North and South!
**********************
*AND….IF…you watch the mini-series tonight and/or comment here on North and South, I’ll put your name in a drawing for a DVD set of North and South, the winner of which will be announced next week. (You’ll have to get your own back up copy. And back up for the back up. Yes, I do…)
I loved it! Richard Armitage was glorious in this role. I can not wait to see it again!
Does anyone know when it will be reshown?

Oh boy…we have a new N&S fan folks! Here’s the scoop…the first time I watched it, I watched 3 consecutive times. That’s right, 3. Each time you watch it, it just gets better!
Altho I will have to say, they chopped it up badly last night. Some key scenes were gone and that IS a tragedy. I hear Net Flix does the same, so you need your own DVD. And from the looks of it, you may get it!!! I sent a message to Inspiration Channel asking when it will be aired again so I’ll let you know what they say. 🙂
Glad you stopped by!! Oh…and Armitage WAS glorious as John Thornton!!! I never can decide if I like Thornton or Gisborne better of his roles. And then there was John Standring….and Harry Kennedy…arggghh!!!!

I asked INSP as well, so I hope they answer one of us. Have to say I like Armitage as Thornton better, because he got the girl this time (lol)! Poor Gisborne never had a chance.
Where have you seen North and South before? Clearly, I’ve been missing out.

Oh wow…long story…saw Persuasion back in 2010, did a search on it at IMDB, saw the message board there talking about “The Best Screen Kiss” ever, referring to N&S. Checked it out at IMDB, researched it a bit on the internet and decided to add N&S to my Amazon order of books. By the time it came in the mail, I couldn’t wait to see it as everything I had read in the interim had me revved up!! OK, so I watched it and watched it and finally loaned it to a relative in town and she went nuts over it. Up to that point, Firth and Ehle’s P&P were my favorite. I also found the message board at IMDB for N&S and from there it went downhill, so to speak. 😀

Since first viewing North and South some years back, I have been both besotted with Richard Armitage (surely the most amazing romantic hero since ever) and the wonderful love story brought to vivid life by the BBC (would that we could do half as well on this side of the pond!). I never get tired of it and being a long time collector of beautiful movie music, wish that they would release a soundtrack cd of the gorgeous score. I can’t recommend it highly enough and there is nothing to equal it in the romantic drama pantheon as far as I’m concerned.

Ditto on everything you said!!!! Just wish there were more of this quality. Thanks for stopping by!

My pleasure–I can never have enough opportunities to talk about Richard and his various endeavors, and N&S is one of my favorites. Oh, who am I kidding–they’re all my favorites depending on which day it might be!

The first time I watched N&S, I watched it twice with barely a pause. Then I had my granddaughters watch it… Reminding them that Richard was Thorin Oakenshield. That got
them started. The 10-year old turned to me, and said, “Grandma, I may be young, but Richard
is HOT!” They sat enraptured for the whole thing. I still have folks I need to convert, so a
second DVD would be great. I ordered the book, which is wonderful, and then when you picture Richard and Daniela in the leads, it goes even beyond that. My favorite Richard is still Harry Kennedy, because he’s so darling in the role. Then John Thornton, whom he plays with such
delicate nuances.

Woo Hoo!!! You start ’em young, girl!! I’ve made a few converts also…one who called me the day after she took it home…at 9AM that next morning. She had stayed up all night watching it and couldn’t believe how good it was/is!!! Quality all around!
Then I have this friend we’ll call Lucy…she doesn’t get it. At all. But period drama isn’t her thing. Plus…she has NO taste. Other than her hubs is a good guy. 🙂 She did OK there!
I need to reread the book…it’s been a while. N&S is my Go To for cake decorating days. Inspiration, doncha know??! Thanks for visiting my blog!

I started my boys on The Beatles early and Irish Traditional music as well (I was a Voice Major in college, so music appreciation started early with church choirs, classical, singing in the car and good popular music.) They have taken that over, so my two granddaughters are being trained. Good books, and good movies, and now a leading for fine acting. It’s my responsibility as well as setting a Christian model for womenhood. (their mother is a wonderful woman).

On that note, I’m going to assume you’ve introduced them to “Christy”? If not, consider it. Great book, wonderful TV Series.

I can’t believe that I actually would pick up North & South at the library, look at it, notice that it was 4 hours long, and think, “I don’t have time to watch this now.” I did this for about a year! I had discovered Richard first in Robin Hood, and The Hobbit was coming out, so I knew it was now or never. Needless to say, I have since been enthralled/mesmerized/addicted to all things Richard. I’ve read the book, and like Rita commented earlier, it’s so nice to be able to picture Richard and Daniela in the scenes! I have yet to convince my 21 year old daughter to watch it with me, even though she’s a Richard fan too, but I think it’s because she doesn’t usually sit down and watch TV. However, maybe she just needs her own copy of the DVD! (Sure hope I win!)

LOL…kinda makes you want to kick yourself doesn’t it!? Glad you gave in tho. Just think what you’d be missing!! But..I have to admit..I never watched “Pride and Prejudice” a la Firth until around 2001 when some of my “Christy” friends recommended it to me. That led to All Things Austen which led to N&S and here I am….
Welcome and thanks for the visit!!

Watched N&S years ago, having read the book before that and liking it very much. Something that seems to me incredible is that my crush on RA started when I heard his voice in this series, then I couldn’t let it go. Watched soooo many times till I ruined my copy and couldn’t watch any more. Totally agree that the kiss in the ending scene, is the most romantic I’ve ever seen! RA is a fantastic actor and every character he brings to the screen, t.v. or cinema, is a master piece. Lovely to meet another RA enthusiast.

I found out about Richard Armitage just this year through North and South. It’s a true masterpiece and Richard’s performance is breathtaking. Since then the man and his roles became my addiction, there is no any other way to call it. I’d love to have my own copy of North and South as I’m planning to watch it hundreds more times in the future ))) Thanks for the opportunity

I’d like to take it to our book retreat in the fall. Most of the women like Period Drama. I also have the Third Season of The Vicar of Dibley…made my oldest DIL watch it and now she’s converted, but she hasn’t watched N&S yet. I may buy it for her because I don’t want to loan mine out and have to wait for it to come back…not a library…but it’s my baby.
Lexi, my 10 year old, watched The Hobbit with me first. Her parents were concerned she might be frightened, but I knew this one would be ok…so we watched it together. Then we watched The Vicar of Dibley Episode 8, and then she was ready for N&S. I had to pause it and explain the conditions in South and Northern England to her, and about the Vicar’s decision. I like those
time periods for the gentle romance and delicate courtship, and of course, the “terrible misunderstandings”. Lexi is a convert as is her 16 year-old sister…who has me hooked on Dr. Who as a turn-about-is-fair-play, Grandma…thing. (Late! Have Yoga in the A.M.) R.

I think we’re going to do movie night with our 2-12 year olds and 2-10 year old grandsons. I wasn’t sure about it back in Dec. but one of their dads has watched it and gave it a thumbs up! I still find Gollum disturbing but usually just close my eyes when he’s on screen. Shhhh, don’t tell Andy Sirkis that…
“gentle romance and delicate courtship”..lovely description of the times!!! And welcome!!

Must a commenter have watched the mini-series, or can they just comment to enter the drawing? My anal nature demands this question since you have an ‘and’ in that sentence about entering. 😆

Nope…just comment! Preferrably about the movie IF you saw it…but if you haven’t seen it and want to be in the drawing so you CAN see it, great. I was just curious to hear what first time viewers thought. Sorry for the fuzziness. In other words…just comment!! 😀

Sir Peter Jackson said he could not believe how UNDER-rated Mr. Armitage is, as an actor, and was thrilled to get him for an audition. Then when Mr.A auditioned, Ms. Fran, and Ms. Phillipa , his Co-Producers, jumped, telling each other, “…that’s OUR Thorin!!!!!!” Mr. A’s work in N&S had sealed it . And YOU,watching, get to SEE,HEAR,FEEL, the “electric perfection” between Mr. Armitage & Ms. Denby-Ashe..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are just …Terrific!!! Spot On!! And they both speak on how much fun they had, playing off each other..Both they’re FUN and PROFESSIONALISM shows, and is such a pleasure to watch! You’ll think, “What! It CAN”T be over!..I just hit “Play”!! Finally, it’s in the US…better late than never!…THX for this site, and ALL your hard work!

i just wish they hadn’t butchered it so badly, since it’s the first time it’s made it over here–on the other hand, if it inspires people to want their own copy, that could be a great thing.

It reminds me of a case some years back when I was trying to introduce my then-boyfriend to another perennial favorite movie of mine, “The Philadelphia Story”. This was long before the advent of TCM, etc.–whoever was wielding editing scissors completely obliterated one of the most crucial scenes in the entire film, a speech by the main character’s father set up in detail the way the main character lived her life and responded to other people–without which a great deal of the film made no sense whatsoever. If they’re going to edit, they need to make sure that the person carrying out the edit knows what they’re doing. It’s bad enough that they feel the necessity to slice and dice masterpieces of film.

Marybeth…That is too funny. The first time I watched them boarding the train together at the end, I screamed, “NOOOOOO. Don’t end here!!!!” Sad but true. I was hooked in the first 10 minutes. However, BB is less than enthusiastic about N&S..but this is the same man who sees no point in watching his hero John Wayne in the classic “The Quiet Man”. I give up. His theory is why watch romance when you’ve got it at home. Let’s watch a good shoot ’em up cause we can’t do that in real life. I give up. I just give…up. 🙂

Oh, forgot to say that Richard Armitage is rarely paired with an actress with which he has a “chemistry” like Daniela Denby-Ashe. It’s apparent that it’s there. In Spooks, none of the women gave that spark, nor in Sparkhouse or in Strike Back. This performance is rare.

I think I need a North and South fix this afternoon (I have it.). My personal carpenter is renovating the kitchen, not a major overhaul, but you’d not know it. Slow he is! We have probably 5 feet left for beadboard on the wall behind the new countertop and it’s taken all week! Argh. So I’m prescribing a visit to Milford. I have the last season of Robin Hood, but I’m too anxious to watch that.
