Big Boss and I are going on a “real” trip! We’re taking the two oldest grands to Washington D.C.!!
Have you been there? What did you love? What do you wish you had skipped? Top 5 places to visit? Or Top 50??!!
I have questions like: We’re hoping to get in to the Holocaust Museum…but…is it appropriate for nearly 13 year olds?
We’re ALL excited and with the help of a profession trip/tour guide friend of ours, I’m getting things pulled together. I think. I hope. I pray!!!!!
Sure, BB and I have been to D.C. before. We were there 3 days, more or less and saw:
The Capitol building tour, thanks to Sen. Pat Roberts…
The Museum of Natural History and American History at the Smithsonian…
Arlington Cemetery, Changing of the Guard and the Robert E. Lee home tour
Monticello (not technically D.C.) but fabulous
Mount Vernon, equally as fabulous as Monticello!
The Cherry Tree Blossoms
The above “sight/site” (me and the tree) was the reason we saw nothing else. Well, we saw the White House, Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial…from a distance. The lines at all of those place were miles and miles long. Plus….there just wasn’t enough time to “do it all”!! But…Do NOT go during the Cherry Blossom Festival people.
DON’T DO IT!!
Big mistake. Actually, we had NO idea our trip was going to coincide with the Festival until about 3 days before we left. I remember meeting BB at the door with the exciting news that we would “get to see” the blossoms. He was thrilled. Neither of us knew what those blossoms would entail!
It was the weekend and every human being on the face of the planet was in D.C. to see the blossoms. Yay! It was shoulder to shoulder on the Mall. Hopeless. You couldn’t get to any of the memorials or the Holocaust Museum…there were lines to get into the lines, which translated into hours of line. No thanks.
On the other hand, we did get to see:
Gettysburg, with Big Boss pointing to his Great-Great-Grandfather’s name (which is also his) on the Pennsylvania Memorial
We also went to Jamestown…
Williamsburg was one of Big Boss’s favorite places. He would still be there…
So…if you’ve been to D.C., tell me what your favorite places were and any sage advice that might happen to cross your mind!!!!??
