Mr. Tolkien, Mr. Shore and Sir Peter

Image courtesy of DarkJackal and isn’t it outstanding?!! Her description of her drawing: “Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, in The Hobbit. The intensity of his look captivated me enough to dust off my drawing tools and try my hand at replicating the magnificence of the King under the Mountain.

I discovered a new blog… “The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films” by Doug Adams.  What an interesting blog and it only gets better when he discusses The Hobbit!!!

I know, I know…not all of you are Hobbit fans!  But some of you are music fans, right?  The music of The Lords of the Ring mesmerized me and I was an instant Howard Shore fan.  My favorite piece was the scene with Aragorn singing at the end of The Return of the King. (Or maybe when Frodo and gang first enter Rivendell?) And did you know that Renee Fleming and Sir James Galway are featured throughout the movie?  I did NOT until I paid attention to the credits!

I kept elbowing BB, asking, “Did you hear that?”  or “Wow, wasn’t that beautiful?”.  Poor guy.  No wonder he hates LotR.  Well, maybe not hate…but he thinks this fantasy stuff is weird.  Give him John Wayne and he’s a happy little camper.  Popcorn tops it all off for him.

So, any news about The Hobbit soundtrack is absorbed, researched, listened to repeatedly and analyzed. When I stumbled upon this new LotR blog, I found it intriguing to read the reactions at Doug’s blog on the release of The Hobbit trailer last December.  If you get a chance, go read here!!

So far, we don’t know much about the soundtrack other than what we saw in the first trailer December 2011.  BUT…rumor has it that a second trailer is about to be released any day.  And possibly we’ll hear some more of Mr. Shore’s new pieces?!!!  If they’re anything like the “Misty Mountain” ballad, we’re in for a treat. Or two!

I know I’ve said it before, but NEVER have I been so excited about a movie!  Star Wars came close but this is just too much! Tolkien’s unforgettable tale, Howard Shore’s awesome music, Peter Jackson’s genius directing, filming in  New Zealand, Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage and so many other fantastic talents are involved in this project. And December is how far away?

More Hobbity stuff later….  🙂

I JUST CAN’T WAIT!!!

Also found this little ditty a while back to tide me over…

  1. That was such a treat!! The sketch is amazingly accurate and beautiful. Such talent! I loved the musical trailer, but my computer has to pause every few seconds to download the next part, so it was interrupted quite a lot (this is the new laptop, not the old one). I must research how to make it faster. But thanks for ‘Hobbity’ news, Queenie! Your enthusiasm is contagious!

*off to check out Howard Shore music* 😀

Pat, go to Amazon and do a search on LofR and you’ll get a page that lists each song and you can listen to short samples of each one. And of course, I always end up buying a download of some sort!!

I love Howard Shore’s music. I was especially thrilled to discover that he was in one of my fave ’70s bands – Lighthouse!

Phylly, Lighthouse is new to me! But then in the 70’s, I was changing diapers. Not much band news in my life then!! To be honest, I look forward to the music as much as I do the actual movie/actors/scenery!! 🙂

I had thought that depiction of Thorin above by Dark Jackal was the photo from PJ’s videoblog redone in black and white with PhotoShop Elements or whatever that program that Angie Long uses is called! I’m truly amazed that it is a drawing! Such talent, indeed..

BTW. I just loved the music vid – thank you for uploading it.

I thought the same until a fellow blogger confirmed it was a drawing. Then I found DJ’s deviantart site and saw it was indeed a drawing! Amazing gift huh? Maybe we can talk DJ into getting those pencils out again soon?!!!

I don’t pretend to understand music, but I know what I like to hear, and for me Shore delivers again and again. He’s outdone himself in this brief trailer. Thanks for the link to the discussion from December where “Ewan” wrote:

“The style of the song references gregorian chant and early organum (monkish vibratoless male voices, Stepwise melody, open and parallel 5ths)”

That would have been very useful in identifying just what it was about the song that was so interesting (I mean aside from the obvious RA is singing it) 🙂 Of course, like Magpie, I needed the extended explanation.

And thank you all for your comments on the art. It’s really just a matter of slavish replication (taking more hours than I will ever admit to).

Hey, I have a somewhat limited knowledge of music and totally got the Gregorian chant style but the rest of what he said was Greek!! Isn’t it interesting how art in whatever form can take hold of us and we’re not happy until it’s done…if it ever is done! Thanks for stopping by. And I hope…really, really hope..that you’ll be sharing more Hobbity art of your own in the future! “)
